Jean-Baptiste Accolay (1833-1900) was a Belgian violin teacher, violinist, conductor, and composer of the Romantic period. He is best known for his student violin concerto in A minor, which has become a standard in many violin teaching programs. In addition to his compositional work, Accolay was a respected performer and conductor, and his influence as a teacher extended well beyond his own lifetime.

Accolay studied violin under Lambert Mathieu and later became a professor of violin at the conservatory in Liege. He composed several pieces for violin and piano, as well as chamber music and orchestral works. However, it is his student concerto that has become his signature piece and the work for which he is best remembered.

The violin concerto in A minor was composed in 1868 and is a one-movement work featuring a variety of technical challenges for the soloist, including rapid runs, double stops, and arpeggios. The concerto has been a staple of the violin repertoire for many years, and is frequently used as a teaching tool for violin students.

Accolay's work as a teacher and composer helped to establish a tradition of Belgian violin playing that continued well into the 20th century. While he may not be as well-known as some of his contemporaries, Accolay's contributions to the world of music continue to be felt to this day, particularly through his enduringly popular student concerto.
