Jan Levoslav Bella (1843-1936) was a Slovak composer, conductor, and music teacher. He is known for his contribution to the Nationalist Romantic movement of the 19th century , where he sought to write music with a distinct Slovak character.

At the young age of 16, Bella wrote a mass with orchestral accompaniments, which highlights his early interest in composition. He then went on to study music in Prague and Vienna, where he was introduced to the works of German and Austrian composers.

Despite his exposure to the German and Austrian music scenes, Bella remained committed to his Slovakian roots, incorporating folk music and themes into his compositions. Some of his most notable works include his symphony "The Slovak Nation" and his opera "The Captive of the Caucasus."

Bella was not only a composer but also an accomplished conductor and music teacher. He taught at the Bratislava Music School, where he influenced many young Slovakian musicians and helped to elevate Slovakian music onto the international stage.
