Jan Křtitel Kuchař was a prominent Czech Baroque composer who lived between 1751 and 1829. He was born in Kutná Hora, a town in central Bohemia, and showed musical talent at a young age. He received his early musical training at the local Jesuit gymnasium, where he sang in the choir and learned to play the organ.

Kuchař went on to study composition in Prague with Josef Seger, a leading Czech Baroque composer. he was considered by many to be Seger's most talented pupil. Kuchař's compositional output was diverse, including all genres of church music, as well as orchestral and chamber works.

Despite his talent, Kuchař faced significant challenges during his lifetime, including a lack of recognition and poor health. He struggled financially and was forced to take on other jobs, including a position as a secretary to a nobleman in Vienna.

In 1789, Kuchař returned to Bohemia and became the music director of the Church of Our Lady in Kutná Hora. He remained in this position until his death in 1829. Despite his struggles, Kuchař left a lasting mark on Czech music, influencing the work of later composers such as Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana. Today, he is remembered as one of the great Czech Baroque composers, known for his expressive melodies, inventive counterpoint, and use of Czech folk idioms in his compositions.
