He was born in the town of Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Ireland and showed an early aptitude for music. James Lynam Molloy initially worked in his family's business before moving to Dublin to pursue his musical ambitions.

Molloy's career as a composer began around the mid-1860s, and he went on to compose hundreds of songs during his lifetime. His most famous work is "Love's Old Sweet Song," which he composed in 1884 with lyrics by Graham Clifton Bingham. The song became an instant hit and remains popular to this day.
