Full biography James Hewitt
James Hewitt (1770-1827) was an American conductor, composer, and music publisher who played an important role in the early New York musical scene. Born in Dartmoor, England, Hewitt migrated to the United States in 1792 and by 1794 he was serving as the organist at St. Peter's Church in New York City. Hewitt was known for his compositions and arrangements of popular songs and patriotic tunes of his time.
As a composer, Hewitt wrote over 84 songs, including "The Battle of Trenton," "The Fourth of July A Grand Federal Piece," and "John Adams' Grand March," which were popular during the early years of the United States. He also employed many English and Scottish musicians in his music publishing business, which was one of the most significant music publishing operations in the early United States.
Beyond his music career, Hewitt was known for his generous spirit and support of charitable organizations in New York City. He was a member of the New York St. Andrew's Society, which supported indigent Scots, and was also an active contributor to the New York Society Library.
Despite his contributions to American music, Hewitt's work has largely been overlooked by history. Nonetheless, his contributions to the music of early America have played an important role in shaping the country's musical landscape.
