Gotovac was born in Split, Croatia, and began his music studies in Zagreb, where he studied conducting and composition.

In addition to his opera, Gotovac also wrote orchestral works, choral music, and film scores. He conducted orchestras throughout Europe and was also the director of the Zagreb Opera from 1942 to 1943 and from 1958 to 1962.

He was a recipient of several awards, including the Order of the Yugoslav Flag with Sash, the Order of the Republic with Silver Wreath, and the Croatian State Award for Music.
