Jakob van Domselaer was a Dutch composer who lived from 1890 to 1960. He was a pioneering figure among Dutch modernists and is considered the musician most closely associated with the Dutch "Neue Musik" movement. Van Domselaer's music was characterized by its simplicity and clarity, and he sought to create a new, modern Dutch music that broke from traditional forms and styles.

Van Domselaer's style was influenced by his studies with Johan Wagenaar in Utrecht, but he later went on to experiment with a range of styles and techniques, including polyrhythms and tone clusters. He was also interested in exploring the possibilities of new technology, such as the player piano, and composed several pieces for this instrument.

Van Domselaer's most famous work is perhaps his "Mélodie for Small Orchestra," which was premiered in 1913 and is often considered the first example of Dutch modernism. He also composed a number of other notable works, including his "Symphonieën" and "Variations on a Dutch Folk Tune."

Van Domselaer was not only a composer but was also an important cultural figure in the Netherlands, serving as a professor of music and as a member of several important cultural organizations. His legacy continues to be felt today, and he remains an important figure in the history of modern Dutch music.
