Jacques Boyvin was a French musician and composer born in Rouen in 1649 and died in Paris in 1706. He was a church organist and is primarily known for his compositions for the organ. Boyvin played a significant role in the development of French Baroque organ music and his music has been described as being charming, inventive, and elegant.
Boyvin was an organist at several churches in Rouen before he moved to Paris to become the organist at the Church of Sainte-Madeleine. While in Paris, Boyvin became famous for his skills as a performer and composer. He eventually became the court organist to the Duke of Orleans.
Boyvin's compositions include four collections of organ music, the Premier livre d'orgue, the Second livre d'orgue, the Third livre d'orgue and the Fourth livre d'orgue. These collections contain a total of 84 pieces and are considered to be among the most important works of French Baroque organ music.
Boyvin's music is characterized by its elegant and lyrical melodies, its colorful harmonies, and its highly ornamented musical lines. His music was highly influential in the development of French Baroque organ music, and it influenced composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach.
Jacques Boyvin's music is still performed and recorded today and his reputation as a composer continues to grow.
