Full biography Ivor Atkins
Ivor Algernon Atkins (1869-1953) was a renowned English composer, organist, and choirmaster who spent most of his career at Worcester Cathedral. He was a student of Sir Edward Elgar, and he was particularly well-known for his arrangements of Elgar's works for choirs and soloists.
Atkins was appointed organist and choirmaster at Worcester Cathedral in 1897, a position he held for over 50 years. He was responsible for the music at all of the cathedral's services and oversaw the choir's rehearsals and performances. He was also responsible for commissioning new works for the choir and organizing concerts and recitals.
In addition to his work at the cathedral, Atkins was also a prolific composer and arranger. He wrote more than 200 works, including anthems, hymns, and psalm settings, many of which were written for use in the church. He also arranged works by other composers, including Edward Elgar, Gustav Holst, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Atkins had a strong interest in promoting the music of Edward Elgar, and he was an advocate for the composer during his lifetime and after his death. He edited several collections of Elgar's works, including the Enigma Variations and the Dream of Gerontius, and he arranged many of Elgar's works for choir and orchestra.
Atkins was highly regarded as a musician and a scholar of music, and he received several honors during his lifetime. He was knighted in 1937 for his contributions to music, and he received an honorary DMus from the University of Cambridge in 1946. Today, his music continues to be performed and recorded, and he is remembered as one of England's most important composers and musicians of the early 20th century.
