Ivan Aleksandrovich Vishnegradsky (1893-1979) was a Russian composer known primarily for his contributions to microtonal music. Born in St. Petersburg, his father was a banker and his mother was a poet. Vishnegradsky began his musical education at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied with Nikolai Sokolov and Nikolai Tcherepnin. He later studied with Ferruccio Busoni in Berlin and later with Charles Ives in the United States.
Vishnegradsky is considered one of the pioneers of microtonal music, which involves dividing the octave into smaller intervals than the standard twelve-tone division familiar to most Western music. He developed a complex system of harmony based on quarter-tones and other micro-intervals that he called the "ultra-chromatic" system. Vishnegradsky's music often features unconventional instrumentation and extended techniques, such as glissandi, quarter-tone bends, and microtonal inflections.
