Isabel Aretz was a composer born in Mexico City in 1934. Throughout her career, Aretz became known for her unique compositions that blended elements of traditional Mexican music with contemporary avant-garde techniques.

Aretz began studying music at a young age and went on to earn a degree in composition from the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. After completing her studies, she began working as a composer and quickly gained recognition for her innovative style.

One of Aretz's notable works is "Imágenes" (Images), a composition that features traditional Mexican instruments such as the maracas, cajón, and the quijada. She also often incorporated her personal experiences, culture, and politics into her music, constantly breaking down barriers.

Aretz was not only limited to composing music, as she also collaborated with several contemporary Mexican poets and artists, including Octavio Paz and José Luis Cuevas. Together, they worked on interdisciplinary projects that explored the intersections between music and other art forms.

Throughout her life, Aretz was an advocate for promoting new music and supporting emerging artists. In 1985, she founded an important cultural space called "Taller de Composición" (Composition Workshop) in Mexico City, which provided opportunities for aspiring composers and musicians.

In recognition of her contributions to the Mexican music landscape, Isabel Aretz was awarded the National Arts Prize by the Mexican government in 1990. Aretz continued to compose music until she passed away in 2005 at the age of 71, leaving behind an impactful legacy in the Mexican contemporary music scene.
