Hugo Chaim Adler was a renowned Belgian-born cantor and composer of Jewish sacred music who lived from 1894 to 1955. He was born in Antwerp, Belgium, to a family of cantors and composers, and from an early age displayed a remarkable talent for music. He later moved to Mannheim, Germany, where his father was the chief cantor of the city's main synagogue.

Adler studied music in Vienna before returning to Mannheim to become the cantor at the city's main synagogue. He also served as the director of the synagogue's choir and as a professor of music at the city's conservatory. When the Nazis came to power, Adler and his family fled to the United States, where he was appointed as cantor at a synagogue in Worcester, Massachusetts. He later went on to become a professor of music at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York.

Adler was a prolific composer who wrote many large-scale cantatas on biblical and other Judaic subjects , as well as numerous settings of prayers and liturgical music. His music was deeply rooted in Jewish tradition, but also reflected the broader classical music styles of his time. His works were performed around the world and have become an important part of the Jewish sacred music tradition.
