Howard Ferguson (21 October 1908 – 31 October 1999) was an Irish composer and musicologist from Belfast ). He was known for his instrumental, chamber, orchestral, and choral compositions. Besides being a composer, he was also a pianist, teacher, and musicologist.
Ferguson started his music education at an early age with his mother, a pianist. He later studied at the Royal College of Music in London and became an assistant professor of music at the same college. He was heavily influenced by the music of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, and his compositions showed a strong understanding of traditional forms and harmony.
Ferguson's compositions were primarily written for the piano, although he also wrote many chamber pieces, instrumental and orchestral works, and choral music. He was a versatile composer who employed a wide range of styles, from neoclassicism to more experimental forms. Some of his notable compositions include the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, String Quartet No. 2, and the Octet for Winds.
In addition to his composition work, Ferguson was also a respected musicologist, known for his research on the music of William Byrd. He was a member of the Purcell Society and was instrumental in preserving and promoting the music of Henry Purcell.
Ferguson was a highly respected figure in the British music scene, and his contributions to music were widely recognized during his lifetime. He received numerous awards and honors, including an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin and a knighthood in 1972.
