Horatiu Radulescu was a Romanian-French composer born on January 7, 1942, in Bucharest, Romania. He was known for his contributions to the spectral music movement, a style of contemporary classical music that focuses on sound timbres and the harmonic series.
Radulescu began his musical studies at the age of six and continued at the National University of Music in Bucharest. After graduating, he pursued further studies at the Conservatoire de Paris and received his doctorate from the same institution in 1976.
Throughout his career, Radulescu composed a range of works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and solo pieces. He often experimented with unconventional sound sources, such as the human voice and unconventional instruments.
In addition to his contributions to the spectral music movement, Radulescu was also recognized for his work in microtonal music. He believed that conventional music notation was limited in its ability to convey the nuances of microtonal music and developed his own notation system to address this issue.
Radulescu's music has been performed by various musicians and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Arditti Quartet, and the Ensemble Intercontemporain. He received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Gaudeamus International Composers Award in 1974 and the Grand Prix de la Musique Francaise in 1992.
Horatiu Radulescu passed away on September 25, 2008, in Paris, France, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and experimental music.
