Full biography Horatio Parker
Horatio Parker was an American composer, conductor, and teacher born on September 15, 1863, in Auburndale, Massachusetts. He studied music at the Boston Music School, and later at Munich's Royal Conservatory. After returning to the US, he taught at the University of Iowa, before becoming a faculty member at Yale University in 1894, where he remained until his death in 1919.
Parker's music was heavily influenced by Romanticism, and he was known for his expressive melodies and lush harmonies. He wrote extensively for chorus on both sacred and secular texts , including his two oratorios, "Hora Novissima" and "Saint Christopher," and many anthems, hymns, and other choral works. Parker also wrote two operas , a symphony, and numerous smaller vocal and instrumental works.
In addition to his career as a composer, Parker was an influential teacher and conductor. He was one of the founders of the American Guild of Organists and served as its national president from 1896 to 1898. He taught a generation of composers, including Charles Ives, who studied with him at Yale. Parker's other notable students include Horatio Connell, Leo Sowerby, Homer Grunn, and Henry Gilbert.
Overall, Horatio Parker was a prolific and highly regarded figure in American music during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His contributions to choral music, opera, and symphonic music continue to be celebrated today.
