Hermann Reutter was a German composer and pianist born on June 17, 1900, and died on January 1, 1985. He was known for his compositions of operas, orchestral works, chamber music, and especially lieder, in which he set poems by authors writing in German , Russian, Spanish, and other languages. Reutter gained popularity in the early 1930s, and between 1930 and 1936, he toured the U.S. seven times as an accompanist. He was also a frequent composer for the annual music festival of the Allgemeine Deutsche Musikverein where many of his works were premiered.
One of Reutter's notable compositions is the song "Drum" or "Trommel" in German , which sets a poem of Langston Hughes. It is the second song in Reutter's song cycle. Another notable work is his chamber opera, "Der heilige Schutzengel," which premiered in Leipzig in 1940.
Reutter's work was influenced by a range of composers, including Bach, Mozart, Schubert, and Schumann. He studied in Stuttgart and Leipzig with Max von Pauer, Max Reger, and other notable composers, and also taught composition at the Stuttgart Hochschule für Musik from 1934 to 1940.
Reutter's legacy continues to inspire and influence contemporary composers and pianists, and his works continue to be performed and studied across the world.
