Herman Berlinski (1910-2001) was a German-born American composer , organist, pianist, musicologist, and choir conductor. He was a prolific composer of Jewish liturgical music and wrote secular pieces for the organ as well. Berlinski's Jewish roots and family traditions were central to his creative output , and his compositions reflected a deep understanding of Jewish liturgy and tradition.

Berlinski spent his childhood in Germany, but after facing persecution from the Nazis, he fled to the United States in 1933. In America, he continued his musical studies and eventually became a citizen. He held a number of positions throughout his career, including serving as the music director for several synagogues in the United States. In this capacity, he composed a large amount of Jewish liturgical music, including settings for prayers and psalms.

In addition to his work in religious music, Berlinski also wrote secular pieces for the organ , which he learned to play as a child. He was known for combining traditional Jewish melodies with contemporary musical techniques, resulting in a unique and innovative sound.

Throughout his career, Berlinski received numerous honors and awards, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. His music continues to be performed and recorded today, and he is remembered as an important figure in the world of Jewish musical composition.
