Short bio Herbert Brun
Full biography Herbert Brun
Herbert Brun (1918-2000) was a German-born composer and musician, who is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of electronic and computer music. He was also a cybernetician, and his work helped shape the field of computer music, influencing generations of musicians, artists, and theorists. Brun's music was modern and daring, and he worked with a variety of instruments, including electronic media.
Born in Berlin, Brun fled Nazi Germany in 1936 for Jerusalem , where he studied piano with Stefan Wolpe. He later studied at the University of Southern California with Leon Kirchner and at Princeton University with Milton Babbitt. In the 1950s and 1960s, Brun worked with a range of early electronic and computer music instruments, including sound generators, tape machines, and computer programs. He also conducted research into cybernetics and information theory, which influenced his compositional techniques.
In addition to his work as a composer and musician, Brun was also a teacher and lecturer. He taught at a number of institutions, including the Center for Advanced Study at the University of Illinois, the University of California at San Diego, and the University of Southern California.
Brun's contribution to the development of computer music and his exploration of the intersection between technology and creativity continue to inspire musicians and artists today.
