Full biography Henry Lawes
Henry Lawes (1596-1662) was an English composer, known primarily for his works in the mid-17th century. He was the elder brother of William Lawes, also a composer. While Henry Lawes wrote little instrumental music , he wrote over 400 vocal pieces , including songs, anthems, and separate works for two and three voices, which gained him acclaim in his time.
Lawes was noted for his continuo songs, which were popular during the Baroque period, and he also wrote music for several masques, including Thomas Carew's "Coelum Britannicum." He was a court musician and a lutenist, and he counted the poet John Milton among his friends.
Lawes's work is considered significant because of its beauty, consistency, and craftsmanship. His pieces were esteemed for their musicality and their ease of singing, with powerful emotional resonance.
Henry Lawes continues to be regarded as one of the leading English composers of his time. His songs and other works continue to be performed and appreciated today, more than 350 years after his death.
