Heinrich Sutermeister (12 August 1910 – 16 March 1995) was a Swiss composer , known for his contributions to concert, chamber, and religious music. He wrote over 100 pieces, including several concertos for piano, cello, and clarinet, as well as cantatas and chamber music.
Sutermeister studied at the Zurich University of the Arts and later worked at the Zurich Opera. He gained international fame for his opera "Romeo und Julia," based on Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet." The opera premiered in 1940 in Zurich and has since been performed in numerous theaters around the world.
Aside from opera, Sutermeister also wrote numerous instrumental and vocal works. One of his best-known instrumental compositions is "Capriccio" for solo clarinet, a piece that showcases the full range of the instrument's capabilities. He was also known for his religious compositions, including Missa da Requiem.
Sutermeister's music combines traditional melodies with modern harmonies to create a sound that is at once timeless and contemporary. His works have been praised for their expressive power and lyrical beauty.
