Gyorgy Ranki was a prominent Hungarian composer, pianist, and musicologist born on November 18th, 1932, in Budapest. He began his musical journey as a pianist, studying at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and later receiving a scholarship to study at the Moscow Conservatory.

Ranki's compositions were mainly influenced by Hungarian folk music and his personal relationships. His first published composition was a work for piano, and in the following years, he went on to compose for chamber music ensembles, orchestra, and even ballet. He received international recognition after winning the Bartók composition competition in 1963 for his work, "Voices of the Four Movements."

Aside from composing, Ranki was also known for his work as a musicologist, and his book, "Bartók the Pianist," became a standard reference for pianists studying the compositions of Bela Bartok.

Ranki's compositions were praised for their unique style, intense emotions, and intricate rhythms, which drew inspiration from Hungarian folk music. Some of his notable works include "Piano Concerto No. 1," "In Memoriam for Ferenc Liszt," and "Divertimento for Strings." He received numerous awards and accolades, including the Liszt Award and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic.

Sadly, Ranki passed away on March 4th, 1996, leaving behind a legacy as a composer, pianist, and musicologist who contributed significantly to Hungary's musical history.
