Full biography Gunter Kochan
Gunter Kochan (2 October 1930 - 22 February 2009) was a German composer who was known for his work in various genres. He was considered one of the leading symphonists of the 20th century in Germany due to his extensive and diverse oeuvre.
Kochan was born in Luckau, Germany, in 1930. He won composition prizes in the United States and eastern Europe and was also the winner of a composition contest held by the Los Angeles Tuba Quartet (LATQ) for new works for four tubas.
Kochan's work included vocal music , instrumental chamber music, and works for orchestra. He was particularly praised for his cantatas and masses. One of his most famous works was the cantata "Die Asche von Birkenau," which was a memorial piece for Holocaust victims.
Kochan was a student of Hanns Eisler in East Berlin and also taught at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. Additionally, he also composed music for films and television, including for the DEFA Film Library.
Kochan passed away in Berlin in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of impressive compositions and contributions to the world of classical music in Germany.
