Graham Fitkin is a British composer, pianist, and conductor born on April 19, 1963. He is known for his unique style of composition that incorporates elements of minimalism, post-minimalism, and classical music. Much of his writing is for the piano, including solo and multiple player works , and he has also written extensively for orchestras and chamber ensembles.
Fitkin began his musical career as a pianist, studying at the Royal College of Music in London before transitioning to composition. He has worked with a wide range of musicians and ensembles, including the London Sinfonietta, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and Yo-Yo Ma. Fitkin has also collaborated with various choreographers and dancers and has written music for several dance productions.
One of Fitkin's most recognizable compositions is "Flak," a work for multiple pianos that has been performed around the world. He has also written several concertos for different instruments, including "Intimate Curve," a concerto for orchestra that he composed during his tenure as a composer-in-residence in Liverpool.
In addition to composing, Fitkin has also been involved in music education and has conducted workshops and lectures at various institutions. He has been the recipient of several awards, including the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Composers and the British Composer Awards.
