Full biography Gottfried Heinrich Stolzel
Gottfried Heinrich Stolzel (1690-1749) was a highly prolific and respected German composer of the Baroque era. He was born in Grunstadt, near Schwarzenberg, in the Erzegebirge region of Germany, and received his first music lessons from his father. He went on to study at Leipzig University and later worked in various cities across Germany and Austria.
Stolzel composed a wide range of works, including operas, oratorios, cantatas, concertos, and chamber music. One of his most popular works is the aria "Bist du bei mir," which was originally written for his opera Diomedes.
Stolzel's music is known for its contrapuntal style , imposing harmonies, and use of the trumpet. He was also well-versed in music theory and wrote several treatises on the subject.
Despite his prolific output and esteemed reputation during his lifetime, Stolzel's music fell out of favor after his death and was largely forgotten until the 20th century. Today, his music is appreciated for its rich complexity and unique style.
