Short bio Giovanni Valentini
Full biography Giovanni Valentini
Giovanni Valentini was an Italian composer born in Venice around 1582. He was a prominent figure of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods, and his music is known for combining traditional polyphonic styles with the emerging concertato style, which emphasized soloistic virtuosity.
Valentini first gained recognition as a composer when he was appointed as the court organist and composer in Munich by the Duke of Bavaria in 1603. He held this position for the next 29 years and produced a vast amount of music during his time there, including operas, chamber music, and sacred music.
Valentini's style was characterized by his use of musical contrasts, intricate harmonies, and complex polyphony. His music often featured unusual modulations and dissonances, as well as lavish ornamentation, which reflected his fascination with the newest musical trends of his time.
Valentini's most notable works include his collection of 20 sonatas for violin and basso continuo, his setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah for choir, and his opera, Andromeda liberata, which was composed for the wedding of the Elector of Bavaria in 1627.
Despite his fame during his lifetime, after his death in Munich in 1649, Valentini's music fell into obscurity and was largely forgotten for centuries. It was only in the 20th century that his work began to recapture the attention of music scholars and performers, who praised its originality and ingenuity. Today, Valentini is recognized as a significant figure of the early Baroque period and an innovative composer whose music continues to captivate and inspire listeners.
