Full biography Giovanni Sgambati
Giovanni Sgambati was an Italian pianist and composer who lived from 1841 until 1914. He is known for promoting a revival of instrumental and symphonic music in Italy during the late 19th century , as well as for his own compositions.
Sgambati began his musical studies as a child and went on to study with Liszt in Germany. He later returned to Italy, where he became involved in the development of the music scene in Rome. He founded the Società del Quartetto, an organization dedicated to the performance of chamber music, and he also served as the conductor of the Rome Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sgambati's compositions include symphonies, piano quintets, and other works for chamber ensembles. He was influenced by composers such as Brahms and Wagner, and his music is characterized by a rich and expressive harmonic language.
In addition to his own compositions, Sgambati was also known for his advocacy of the music of other composers. He was particularly interested in promoting the works of Bach, Handel, and Scarlatti, and he transcribed many of their keyboard works for performance on the piano.
Sgambati's contributions to the development of music in Italy were significant, and he was highly regarded by his contemporaries. His legacy continues to be remembered today through performances and recordings of his music.
