Giles Swayne is a British composer, born on June 30th, 1946 in Hitchin, UK. He started playing the piano at an early age and began writing music, encouraged by his cousin Elizabeth Maconchy who was also a composer. He went on to study music at Trinity College and later obtained a PhD degree in composition from King's College London.
Swayne's music is known for its sustained, muscular lines and its unique blend of traditional and contemporary styles. He has composed music for various genres including chamber, orchestral, vocal, and choral music. Some of his works include "Convocation" for wind ensemble, "Everybloom" for choir and orchestra, and "Missa Tiburtina" for a cappella choir.
Swayne has also worked as a composer-in-residence for various institutions, including the London borough of Hounslow from 1980 to 1983. He has influenced a number of young composers and has taught music composition at various music schools including the Royal Academy of Music, King's College London, and the Dartington International Summer School.
