Amy studied at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was a student of Olivier Messiaen. He also worked with other influential composers such as Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen, who greatly influenced his musical style.
Amy's compositions often incorporated elements of serialism, aleatoric music, and micro-tonality. He was known for his use of unconventional instruments and his interest in exploring new soundscapes. Some of Amy's notable works include his Cello Concerto, Musique pour accordéon, and Concerto for 20 Instruments.
In addition to composing music, Amy was also a writer. He wrote several articles and books on contemporary music, including a biography of Pierre Boulez. He was also a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he taught composition.
