Giacomo Fogliano was an Italian composer , organist, harpsichordist, and music teacher of the Renaissance, active mainly in Modena in northern Italy. He was born in 1468 and died on April 10, 1548. He composed both sacred music and instrumental compositions, and is known for his contributions to the development of ricercars, which were elaborate instrumental pieces similar to fugues. Some of his surviving works include "Ricercar del primo tono" and the sacred motet "Miserere Mei Deus". Fogliano's compositions were admired by his contemporaries and influenced many later composers. Today, his works are occasionally performed by early music ensembles and studied by music scholars.
