Georgy Sviridov was a neoromantic composer born on December 16, 1915, in Fatezh, Kursk Governorate, Russian Empire (now Kursk Oblast, Russia) and passed away on January 5, 1998. He is considered one of the most important composers of 20th century Russia. Sviridov received his formal musical education at the Leningrad Conservatory, where he studied under Dmitri Shostakovich, among others.
Throughout his career, Sviridov wrote music in a variety of genres, including chamber music, choral music, film scores, and orchestral music. He is perhaps best known for his vocal music, including his many settings of Russian Romantic poetry by writers such as Mikhail Lermontov and Alexander Pushkin. He was also known for his use of folk elements in his compositions, creating a distinctive style that combined traditional Russian melodies with modern harmonies and orchestration.
Sviridov's music has been featured in a number of films and television shows, including the main theme for the video game Metal Gear Solid, which borrowed from his work "The Winter Road." Some of his notable works include choral ballads such as "Russia Cast Adrift," "The Songs of Troubled Times," and "The Snowstorm," as well as film scores for movies such as "The Chief of Chukotka" (1966), "Time, Forward!" (1965), and "The Unforgettable Year 1919" (1951).
