George M. Cohan was an American composer, entertainer, playwright, lyricist, actor, and producer who lived from July 3, 1878 to November 5, 1942. He is perhaps best known for his contributions to the American musical theater, having written and composed many well-known songs and shows during his lifetime.
Cohan was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and was part of a family of vaudeville performers. From an early age, he was surrounded by music and performance and quickly became a popular figure on the stage. He went on to produce some of the most successful shows of his time, including "Little Johnny Jones" and "George Washington, Jr."
In addition to his work in the theater, Cohan wrote and composed many well-known songs, including "Over There," "Give My Regards to Broadway," and "You're a Grand Old Flag." His songs and shows are strongly characterized by their patriotism and American themes , and many became hits both on Broadway and in popular culture.
