Short bio Georg Joseph Vogler
Full biography Georg Joseph Vogler
Georg Joseph Vogler, also known as Abb Vogler , was a German composer, organist, teacher, and music theorist who lived from June 15, 1749 to May 6, 1814. He was born into a musical family and received his musical education from his father, a skilled violinist and instrument maker.
Vogler was known for his contributions to music theory and his designs of musical instruments. He was a Roman Catholic priest and served as a chaplain to the Swedish court. In 1786, King Gustav III of Sweden invited him to Stockholm to become a professor of harmony and composition at the Royal Academy of Music. He also contributed to the development of Swedish opera during this time.
As a composer, Vogler's works include operas, oratorios, cantatas, and chamber music. Although he was a minor composer in his time, his influence on music theory was significant. He introduced a new system of harmony based on the concept of chord progressions and was a pioneer in the use of chromatic harmonies.
Despite his contributions to music theory and composition, Vogler was not universally loved. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for example, wrote dismissively of him after meeting him in Mannheim in 1777. Nonetheless, Vogler left a lasting legacy in both music theory and composition, and his works continue to be studied and performed to this day.
