Georg Friedrich Haas is an Austrian composer born on August 16, 1953 in Graz, Austria. He is considered to be one of the most important and innovative contemporary music composers. He has written more than 140 works. His compositions include chamber music, orchestral music, concertos, and operas.

Haas studied at the Musikhochschule in Graz and later moved to Vienna to study with celebrated composer Friedrich Cerha. He has been a professor at Columbia University, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, and is currently a professor at the Basel Academy of Music.

Haas is known for his use of microtonality, which involves using intervals smaller than the traditional Western semitone. This technique creates a unique sound that can be both unsettling and mesmerizing. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the prestigious Grand Austrian State Prize in 2003.
