Friedrich Kiel (1821-1885) was a German composer and music teacher. He is well-known for his chamber music compositions, which were highly regarded during his time. Kiel was born in Bad Laasphe and began his music education as a child, receiving his early musical training from his father who was a schoolteacher and a church musician.
Kiel later studied music in Berlin, where he became a student of composer and conductor Gasparo Luigi Pacifico Spontini. He also studied composition with other notable composers like Carl August Haupt and Siegfried Dehn. Kiel's compositions were influenced by the music of Johannes Brahms, an acquaintance and admirer of Kiel's work.
Kiel's compositions are characterized by their lyricism and innovative use of harmony. He wrote a number of choral works, including his Requiem in F minor, which is considered one of his most significant works. He also wrote several pieces for solo piano and organ, as well as a number of works for chamber ensembles, such as his Piano Quintet No.2 and String Quartet No.2.
Aside from his compositions, Kiel was highly regarded as a music teacher. He taught at the Berlin Conservatory for nearly 30 years, where he had a significant impact on the development of German composers like Richard Strauss, Paul Hindemith, and Max Bruch. Kiel was generally regarded as the best composition teacher in Germany during his era.
