Friedrich Gernsheim (1839-1916) was a German composer, conductor, and pianist. He wrote music in a variety of genres, including orchestral music, chamber music, and opera. Throughout his career, Gernsheim was highly regarded by many notable musicians of his time, including Johannes Brahms and Gustav Mahler.

Gernsheim was born in Worms, Germany, and showed early promise as a musician. He studied composition with Franz Lachner in Munich and eventually became a professor of composition at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where he counted Paul Hindemith among his students.

Gernsheim was a prolific composer, with over 100 works to his name. Some of his most notable compositions include his four symphonies, his chamber music, and his operas. His music was characterized by a lyrical and Romantic style, with rich harmonies and expressive melodies.
