Jacobi's compositions ranged from symphonies and concertos to chamber music and works for solo instrument. His music was characterized by its energetic rhythms, lyrical melodies, and inventive harmonies, and was influenced by both classical and modernist styles.

During his lifetime, Jacobi's music was highly regarded by both audiences and critics, and he received many prestigious commissions and awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Pulitzer Prize in Music.

Jacobi was also active as a music educator and a writer on music, editing the journal Modern Music and serving on the faculty of the Juilliard School.
