Full biography Franz Abt
Franz Wilhelm Abt was a German composer and choral conductor , born on December 22, 1819 in Eilenburg, Germany and passed away on March 31, 1885 in Wiesbaden, Germany. He was a prolific composer, having composed roughly 3,000 individual works , mostly in the genre of vocal music, including over 500 published secular vocal pieces in addition to church music, oratorios, operas, and instrumental works. Abt studied music in Leipzig and became known as a songwriter in 1838. He toured extensively throughout Europe, as well as North America in 1872, earning a reputation as a popular choral conductor and performer. Abt's most famous works include "Wenn die Schwalben heimwärts ziehn" (When the Swallows Home Returning), "O, du lieber Augustin" (Oh, You Dear Augustin), and "Abendglocken" (Evening Bells). Abt lived in Braunschweig, Germany from 1852 to 1882, during which time he gave piano lessons and composed many of his most important works.
