Francoise Barrière was a French composer who made significant contributions to the world of electroacoustic music. Born on June 4, 1934, in Paris, she began her musical studies at a young age and went on to pursue her education in music composition at the Conservatoire de Paris.
Barrière's music incorporates electronic sounds and instruments into traditional orchestration to create a unique and distinct sound. She made her debut as a composer in the 1960s, where she quickly gained recognition for her innovative use of new technology in music composition. She was one of the founding members of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM), where she worked alongside other renowned composers such as Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, and Bernard Parmegiani.
Throughout her career, Barrière composed numerous pieces for different mediums, including film, television, and stage productions. She was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for her work "Espaces inquiètes" in 1985 and was also awarded the rank of Knight of Arts and Letters in 2005.
Barrière's music has been played at various prestigious venues worldwide, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the MoMA in New York, and the Ars Electronica Festival in Austria, amongst others. She passed away on August 2, 2019, leaving behind a rich legacy as a composer who fused electronic sounds and traditional orchestration to create a truly unique sound.
