Francois Dufault was a French lutenist and composer who lived from around 1600 until 1672. He was born in Paris, and is believed to have been a student of lutenist Denis Gaultier. Dufault's music is known for its innovative techniques and complex harmonies, which were not typical of the time.

Dufault's music was highly influenced by the Italian Baroque style, which he incorporated into his own unique compositions. He wrote a number of popular lute pieces, such as "Courante" and "La Cavaliere", which are still widely performed today. Many of his compositions were included in various collections of lute music during his lifetime.

Although Dufault was not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, his work had a profound impact on the development of Baroque music. His innovative use of harmony and counterpoint helped to push the boundaries of what was possible in lute music at the time, and his influence can be seen in the work of other composers of the era. Today, Francois Dufault is remembered as one of the greatest lutenists and composers of French Baroque music.
