Francois Borne (1840-1920) was a French composer and flutist. He was born Fernand Borne but later changed his name to Francois in honor of his friend and mentor, Francois-Joseph Fetis. Borne began his musical studies at a young age and quickly showed promise as a flutist. He went on to attend the Paris Conservatory, where he studied with the famous flutist and composer Paul Taffanel.

Borne's compositions are largely focused on the flute, and he is perhaps best known for his Fantasie Brillante on Themes from Bizet's Carmen , which remains a staple of the flute repertoire. He also wrote a significant amount of chamber music for flute and piano, as well as numerous studies and exercises for aspiring flutists.

In addition to his work as a composer, Borne was also a highly regarded flutist. He served as the principal flutist of the Grand Theatre of Bordeaux for over 30 years and was a respected teacher of the instrument , with such famous students as Marcel Moyse.

Borne's music is characterized by its virtuosity, melodiousness, and use of operatic themes. He was particularly skilled in writing music that showcased the capabilities of the flute and pushed the boundaries of what was possible on the instrument.
