Francis Pilkington was an English composer, lutenist, and singer born around 1565. He received a degree in music from Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1595. Pilkington composed lute songs, or ayres, and madrigals, which were secular vocal compositions popular during the Renaissance. His music was known for its delicate and refined style, as well as its skillful use of chromaticism.

Pilkington's most well-known works include "Rest, Sweet Nymphs," a madrigal for five voices, and "Amyntas with His Phyllis Fair," a lute song. He was also a singing man at both St. George's Chapel in Windsor and the Chapel Royal in London.

As an English composer, Pilkington was part of the golden age of English music in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, alongside other renowned composers such as John Dowland and Thomas Morley. The English madrigal, a variation of the Italian madrigal, was a popular genre during this time, and Pilkington was one of its leading composers.

Overall, Francis Pilkington made important contributions to the development of English Renaissance music, especially in the genre of lute songs and madrigals. His music remains an important part of the heritage of English classical music and is still studied and performed by musicians and scholars today.
