Filippo Amadei, also known by his nickname "Pippo del Violoncello," was an Italian composer born in Reggio Emilia in 1670. He was active in Rome and London during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Filippo Amadei is known for his contributions to the opera genre and for collaborating with other notable composers of his time. In 1721, he was one of three composers (alongside Giovanni Bononcini and George Frideric Handel) who wrote one act of the opera "Muzio Scevola." Amadei was responsible for the music in the first act of the opera.
Besides his work in the opera genre, Filippo Amadei composed sonatas and chamber music for various instruments, including the cello, which was his primary instrument. He is believed to have been a well-regarded cellist in his time and was known for his virtuosity on the instrument.
Despite his contributions to music, not much is known about Filippo Amadei's personal life. The exact date of his death is unclear, but it is believed to have been in the mid-1730s. Today, his works are still performed and recorded, ensuring that his legacy as a composer and cellist endures.
