Alvarez began his career studying music in Madrid at the Royal Conservatory of Music, where he received his degree in composition. He then went on to study in Paris under renowned composers such as Adolphe Adam and Jacques Fromental Halévy. These experiences helped him to develop his own unique style, blending elements of traditional Spanish music with more contemporary European styles and techniques.

He composed more than 80 zarzuelas throughout his career, including "La cruz de la Cava," "Teresina," and "La reina Mora."
