Szabo held various positions in the Hungarian music industry, including executive director at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, where he was appointed on September 1, 1958. He was also noted for his work as a music critic, and wrote several book reviews and articles about composers such as Domenico Scarlatti and Ludwig van Beethoven.
Throughout his career, Szabo composed several musical works, including the operas "Ludas Matyi" and "Legy jo mindhalalig," as well as a number of chamber and vocal pieces. His music is often described as expressive and lyrical, characterized by its use of rich orchestration and bold melodies.
