Full biography Eubie Blake

photo Eubie Blake

Eubie Blake was a prolific American composer and pianist who made immense contributions to the development of ragtime and jazz music. He was born on February 7, 1887, in Baltimore, Maryland, and began playing piano at the age of seven. He was a self-taught musician, and his talent soon became apparent as he began performing in local gatherings and vaudeville shows.

Blake became famous in the early 1900s for his ragtime compositions, which were characterized by their heavily syncopated rhythms and lively tempos. His most famous song, "I'm Just Wild About Harry," with lyrics by Noble Sissle, was written for the Broadway musical "Shuffle Along" in 1921 and became an instant hit. The musical was a landmark event as it was the first to feature a predominantly African-American cast and creative team on Broadway.

Blake continued to compose and perform music for several decades, and his style evolved along with the trends of the time. He was highly respected in the jazz community and collaborated with other legendary musicians such as Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. Despite the challenges of the Great Depression and racial discrimination, Blake remained dedicated to his music and continued to perform well into his 90s.

Blake's legacy as a composer and musician has been celebrated in many ways, including a Broadway revue in 1978 called "Eubie!" and a Grammy-nominated album of his piano works performed by Dick Hyman. In recognition of his contributions to American music, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981 and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1995. Eubie Blake's music continues to inspire and delight listeners around the world, and he remains an icon of American musical history.

Best example of The Charleston Rag I've ever heard. Of course it is. It's played by the man who "composed" it. I've been listening to this album since it came out. Enjoy.
