Erwin Dressel (10 June 1909 - 17 December 1972) was a German composer known for his compositions for various instruments including piano , saxophone, and wind ensemble. He was born and died in Berlin, Germany.
Aside from composing, Dressel was also active in arranging music for radio broadcasts and performing as a pianist. He was known for his eclectic style, merging traditional and modern elements in his compositions. Dressel was particularly drawn to wind and brass instruments, and wrote several pieces for these instruments.
During his lifetime, Dressel enjoyed a successful career composing for the concert hall, radio and film (which was a major industry in Germany at the time). Some of his notable works include the "Partita" for alto saxophone and piano and the "Scherzo" for wind ensemble, which were commissioned by the German air force.
Erwin Dressel was among the composers who accompanied the sound of emerging technologies during his time. He was commissioned to write music for the new air force bands , as well as for radio broadcasts and films. He may not be widely known in contemporary classical music circles, but his contributions to German music, specifically during the mid-twentieth century, keep him in the historical record.
