Ernst Wilhelm Wolf (1735-1792) was a German composer who lived during the classical period. Despite being largely forgotten today, Wolf was a prolific composer who wrote a wide variety of music, including symphonies, string quartets, sonatas, and cantatas.

Wolf was born in Größenhain, a small town in Saxony, and began his musical education with his father, who was a church musician. He later went on to study with Johann Gottlieb Graun, a prominent composer and music director at the court of Frederick the Great. Wolf was a gifted student and quickly made a name for himself as a composer and performer.

Throughout his career, Wolf held a number of prestigious positions, including music director at the court of Duke Christian IV of Saxe-Eisenberg and Kapellmeister at the court of William IX, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel. He also spent time in Leipzig, where he was a colleague of Johann Sebastian Bach's son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.

Wolf's music is characterized by its elegance and lyricism, and he is sometimes referred to as a transitional figure between the late Baroque and early Classical periods. While his music is not as well-known today as that of other composers from the same era, he was highly regarded by his contemporaries and critics, and his works were widely performed throughout Europe.

Some of Wolf's most famous works include his Four Symphonies, which were first published in 1778 and are considered some of his finest compositions. He also wrote a number of string quartets and sonatas, as well as cantatas for Christmas and other occasions.

In conclusion, Ernst Wilhelm Wolf was a highly accomplished composer who made significant contributions to the classical music of his time. While he may not be as well-known today as some of his peers, his music remains a testament to his talent and creativity.
