Ernst Gottlieb Baron was a German composer, lutenist, and writer on music, born on February 17, 1696, in Breslau, Silesia (now Wroclaw, Poland). Baron was from a family of musicians; his father, Michael Baron, was a well-known lute maker. Ernst Gottlieb Baron was a major influence in developing the role of the lute and the theorbo in late Baroque music. He composed significant compositions for both instruments and was known for his virtuosity as a lutenist.

Baron contributed to the development of the role of the lute and theorbo as continuo instruments in Baroque music. He wrote many solo and chamber works, as well as a few concerti for lute and orchestra. Baron's compositions were innovative and experimental; he incorporated elements of German and Italian music into his works. His music was widely influential and helped to shape Baroque music of his time and beyond.

Baron was also a respected writer on music and published several treatises, including "Der Codex Hamburghausen," which he wrote in 1720, and "Die lüsternen Musicanten," which he wrote in 1740. These works provide valuable insight into the performance practices of Baroque music, as well as the role of the lute in music composition.

Today, Ernst Gottlieb Baron is remembered as an important figure in Baroque music, particularly for his contributions to the music of the lute and theorbo. His compositions and writings continue to be studied and performed by musicians and scholars around the world, ensuring his legacy as a significant figure in the history of music.
