Ernest Guiraud was a French composer and music teacher born in the United States on May 23 , 1837. He moved to France with his family when he was still very young and eventually became a French citizen. Guiraud is perhaps best known for his work on Georges Bizet's opera "Carmen", specifically for his writing of the traditional orchestral recitatives that were used in the opera. He was a close friend of Bizet and helped him with the orchestration of his operas "The Pearl Fishers" and "Djamileh".

Guiraud was a prolific composer in his own right, and wrote a number of operas, ballets, and other orchestral works. He also wrote several pieces for the piano and other solo instruments, as well as chamber music. Guiraud's musical style was heavily influenced by the Romantic tradition, and many of his works feature lush, sweeping melodies and intricate orchestrations.

In addition to his work as a composer, Guiraud was also a respected music teacher. He taught at the Paris Conservatoire, where his pupils included notable musicians such as Claude Debussy and Albéric Magnard. Guiraud was known for his thorough and rigorous approach to teaching, and his students credited him with helping them develop their skills and refine their musical talents.

Guiraud passed away on May 6, 1892, at the age of 54. He left behind a legacy of music that continues to be performed and appreciated to this day.
