Erik William Chisholm (4 January 1904 – 8 June 1965) was a Scottish composer , pianist, organist, and conductor. He was known as one of Scotland's forgotten composers, but in recent years there has been a renewed interest in his work.

Chisholm was born in Glasgow and showed a precocious talent for music at a young age. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and later in Berlin and Vienna. His early works were influenced by the Scottish folk music tradition, and he became known for his fusion of traditional Scottish music with modernist compositional techniques.

In the late 1940s, Chisholm moved to South Africa and became deeply involved in promoting classical music there. He was the founder of the South African College of Music and established the first symphony orchestra in Cape Town. He continued to compose while in South Africa and wrote a number of operas based on classic works of literature.

Chisholm's music is known for its originality and complexity. He was a master of polyrhythms and polytonality and was always experimenting with new approaches to musical structure and form. His work has been compared to that of composers like Béla Bartók and Olivier Messiaen.

Despite his contributions to modern classical music, Chisholm's work was largely overshadowed by his contemporaries in the UK and Europe, and he was virtually unknown outside of South Africa until recently. However, in recent years there has been a renewed interest in his work, and his music has been performed at festivals and concerts around the world.

Overall, Erik Chisholm was an influential and pioneering composer who made significant contributions to modern classical music. His fusion of traditional Scottish music with modernist techniques was groundbreaking, and his work continues to inspire musicians and composers to this day.
